The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.
LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
The LEED certification standards have changed as a result of a review of proposed updates by the membership of the U.S. Green Building Council. What was formerly known as LEED EB (Existing Buildings) has become LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED EB: O&M). As a result of the review, points that were formerly available for cleaning credits have shifted from New Construction to O&M. For LEED New Construction and Major Renovation, credits are only available for Innovation (Capture and Removal Cleaning with the dust wand will qualify for these additional points). Another contribution to points can be derived from cleaning in the pre-construction and pre-occupancy phase of the construction. LEED EB: O&M credits are available for a variety of categories. A new addition is a Custodial Effectiveness Assessment based on APPA Custodial Staffing Guidelines.
