The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each season. The 2012-2013 flu vaccine will protect against 2009 H1N1, and two other influenza viruses (an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus).

Good Health Habits

Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

Stop the Spread of Germs

Healthy habits can protect everyone from getting germs or spreading germs at home, work, or school.

Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects.
Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu can help slow the spread of influenza.

There are two types of smoke damage after a fire, visible soot and invisible odor. All fires are different, making it difficult to gauge the exact type of damage that will occur. However, in most cases, we would recommend allowing a professional service to come in and properly clean the contents of your home to ensure complete odor removal and the saving of seemingly-unsalvageable items.

In most fire situations, there are three restoration alternatives, cleaning, resurfacing, and replacing.

Cleaning is the removal of soot and foreign matters which are not an original part of the material itself. Cleaning is usually the quickest process and the preferred option for the insurance company and homeowner(s).

Resurfacing is the process of taking a damaged piece of property or existing fixture in the home and redoing the surface of it to make it appear new. For example, if a house is not severely damaged by fire or smoke, but the paint on the walls gets damaged, the contractor can re-paint the walls. The contractor can also provide content refinishing as well as the reupholstering of furniture. Resurfacing is a good option when the homeowner considers certain things as sentimental and/or irreplaceable. Resurfacing can be more costly than cleaning, yet less expensive than replacement. Insurance companies will also recommend this alternative to homeowners.

The last alternative is replacement. Replacement is used when items in the home are destroyed or are beyond economical repair. Replacement is usually the costliest option because the unsalvageable items are being replaced with something new.

Insurance Agents are the people who sell policies to people with insurance or “insureds”. Typically, insurance agents do not adjust losses.

Insurance Adjusters “Investigate, interprets policy, pays claim for covered amount based upon negotiated amount or established pricing database (types-staff; independent; local; manager; general adjuster – G.A.; vendor reviewer; public adjuster – P.A.)” (Disaster Academy Manual, p. 14)

There are three common types of Insurance Policies:

1. ACV – Policy which pays a value arrived by calculating the replacement cost and deducting some portion of the value for depreciation.

2. RCV – endorsement to an ACV policy modifying it to pay the full cost of repair, or replacement of items damaged beyond economical repair. (Usually, this is payable only when damaged items are actually replaced).

3. Fire (named peril) – policy which pays only if certain “named” perils are the cause of loss, rather than “all risk” policy which would cover anything not specifically excluded in policy language. (In fire damage restoration there must be a ‘fire’ to be a covered loss – protein ‘fires’ have no combustion) (Disaster Academy Manual, p. 14)

Most Insurance Policies are Broken Down into Four Divisions:

1. Structure

2. Personal Property

- Personal Property is usually a part of Homeowner’s Insurance. However, in certain instances it may not be covered in it. This type of insurance covers the items or contents within a home that aren’t a physical attachment to the structure itself. Soft goods are also covered in this type of insurance. When sorting out personal insurance, the biggest differentiation is the Actual Cash Value of an item versus the Replacement Cost.

Actual Cash Value – is what something actually costs right now in today’s market or the price/value of something based on its usage

Replacement Cost – is the amount of money your insurance company would give you on an item to help replace it. More than likely many items in your home may be outdated, thereby would have depreciated in value. For instance, if you paid $500 for a new TV, a few years ago, now that TV may be worth half as much if that, meaning you would have to make up the difference in cost to replace that particular item.

It is worth noting that Actual Cash Value and Replacement Cost will vary from policy to policy and that you should check with your specific agent.

There are items that aren’t covered under Actual Cash Value or Replacement cost and those are usually antiques, jewelry, or other expensive items that can be found within a household such as art.

3. Additional Living Expense Insurance

- This type of Insurance takes care of all expenses incurred by an “insured” while they cannot live inside of their home.

4. Other Structures (exterior –unattached)

Every Homeowner’s Insurance Policy is different and as a homeowner you should familiarize yourself thoroughly with your policy so you’re already knowledgeable in the event something happens to your home.

TOLEDO, Ohio – A local food pantry wants to make sure everyone has a comfy night of sleep.

The Toledo Seagate Foodbank is collecting bedtime items for neighborhoods in need. Pajamas, a toothbrush and a blanket, something many of us take for granted. But some go without, the Toledo Seagate Foodbank wants to make sure that doesn’t happen. Starting Tuesday, January 15th thru February 18th, ServiceMaster by Park-Ellis is doing it’s part to help support the food bank and collecting new or gently used PJ’s a full month early, before the drive even starts!

All ServiceMaster by Park-Ellis customers that schedule online with a special promo code and donate to Project PJ will receive 10% off their final bill for any residential cleaning. Look for the special promo code in your local Valpak mailed out the week of January 11th.

Last year, the event was a huge success and we want to help make this year even better!

“Any kind of pajamas are great, children or adult, both are needed. Also bedtime items, books, toothbrushes, blankets anything that you would think of for nighttime,”

This will be the second year for Project PJ and The Toledo Seagate Foodbank says they want people to know they can help with more than just food.

“We want to attend to everybody’s needs and pajamas and nighttime items are something that are always lacking and after Christmas you get kind of a lull in donations so we’re trying to get people on the bandwagon and still have a little fun with it.

We expect to have many more businesses helping support this great cause as we get closer to the event, this is just ServiceMaster’s way of kicking off the drive early to gain momentum and pickup collections while they are already at their customers home cleaning Carpets, Upholstery, Tile & Grout or any other Residential service you can think of!

The donations will serve people in 18 Northwest Ohio counties.
