Flooding can happen easily. Water takes the path of least resistance and often times is caused by an easily avoidable problem like clogged gutters, rotten window seals, poorly installed flashing and bad grading/drainage setup.
Remember that basements are subterranean are naturally more susceptible to moisture issues than the rest of your home. Use a dehumidifier to keep the moisture at a reasonable level. Maintain sump pumps and keep an eye on what is plugged into that circuit, a sump pump with no power has no interest in transporting water away from your home.
